Why Regulate engine oil temperature?

The engine oil temperature has a direct bearing on performance and engine lifespan. If the oil is too cool it causes excessive frictional drag, hindering performance and not getting the oil hot enough to burn off contaminants. If the oil is too hot it can't lubricate the engine correctly, causing loss of oil pressure; resulting in serious engine wear and damage.

What causes engine oil temperature to fluctuate?

  • Increase in engine RPM for prolonged periods of time - track driving/racing.
  • Obstruction of airflow to the sump or existing cooler, modification from original specifications.
  • Oil circulation through an added turbocharger/supercharger can dissipate heat from the oil system.

What is the optimum oil temperature?

Optimum oil temperatures differ between applications.
